Master's degree

The Master in “Biomedical Research” is offered to promote the training of researchers and as a preliminary stage for the completion of the Doctoral Thesis.

The Master is aimed at both specialist doctors (who will combine their clinical activity with research in the future) and non-medical graduates who are expected to be attracted to quality biomedical research at the cellular and molecular level developed in the hospital environment.

The institutions participating in the Master are: the Virgen del Rocío University Hospital, and the University of Seville (Participating Departments: Medical Physiology and Biophysics (Department Responsible for the Program), Anatomy, Surgery, Social and Health Sciences, Medicine, Microbiology).

Duration of Studies

One academic year: 60 ECTS credits.

Entry Profiles

The ideal entry profile for the Master of Biomedical Research is that of graduates in Biomedicine, Biology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Physics, Chemistry, Health Engineering, other Engineering, and related areas.

Objectives

  • Generate high-quality researchers in the field of Biomedicine.
  • Complement the studies of non-biomedical graduates with regulated scientific training in biomedicine in the context of clinical reality and the most prevalent pathologies.
  • Complement the studies of biomedicine graduates with solid training in research into the most prevalent pathologies.
  • Promote student access to Doctoral Programs and the creation of Doctors in Biomedicine with a strong molecular and cellular base.

The planning of each of the three modules in which the Master is structured is specified below:

  • Mandatory module. Composed of two subjects of 4 ECTS each: 'Methodology for biomedical research', and 'Discussions in Biomedicine', the latter consisting of attending and taking advantage of the official scientific seminar cycle of the Institute of Biomedicine of Seville (IBiS), to which renowned national and international scientists are invited.

  • Optional module. The student will cover 32 ECTS with this module. The subjects of this module are 4 ECTS credits and there are a total of 15 in the Master's study plan, so the student will choose 8 of them. They are specialization subjects in biomedical research of the different most prevalent pathologies, or transversal subjects of management of diagnostic and therapeutic methodologies with high relevance in biomedical research.

  • Master's Final Project Module. With this module the student will cover the remaining 20 ECTS of the 28 compulsory ECTS of the master's degree. The student will spend the second semester working in a high-quality biomedical research laboratory in the environment of the Institute of Biomedicine of Seville (www.ibis-sevilla.es), applying all the knowledge acquired and training practically in biomedical research.

The coordinator of the Program is Dr. José L. Nieto, who in turn is a Researcher of the IBiS Molecular Physiology of the Synapse Research Group.
