Animal Production and Experimentation

The Animal Production and Experimentation Service (registered and authorized center no. ES410910008015), complies with all guidelines and regulations regarding housing conditions for experimental animals.

The objective of this service is to provide IBIS/HUVR with technical capacity in animal experimentation, providing the necessary animals for this activity as well as advice on animal experimentation and animal welfare.

The service facilities are governed by current regulations (DIRECTIVE 2010/63/EU and ROYAL DECREE 53/2013), following the principles of replacement, reduction and refinement. Finally, the service manages the center's Animal Experimentation Ethics Committee (CEEA), responsible for evaluating and authorizing, if necessary, the experimental procedures that are requested to be carried out in these facilities. Committee which in turn is an authorized body, by resolution of August 9, 2013 of the General Directorate of Agricultural and Livestock Production of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Environment of the Junta de Andalucía.

Institutional declaration on the use of animals for experimentation.

The Institute of Biomedicine of Seville (IBiS) has joined the agreement on transparency in animal experimentation, promoted by the Confederation of Spanish Scientific Societies (COSCE), with the collaboration of the European Association for Animal Research (EARA) and launched on 20 September 2016.

Animal research plays a fundamental role in the understanding of the biological mechanisms involved in diseases, and in the development of medical treatments. Without the use of animals, we would not have most of the medicines, antibiotics, vaccines and surgical techniques used in human and veterinary medicine.

Part of the important scientific work carried out at IBiS that contributes to the improvement of people's lives is thanks to the use of animals in the Neurosciences, Oncohematology and Genetics, Infectious and Immune System Diseases, as well as Cardiovascular and Respiratory Pathology / other systemic pathologies programmes.

The welfare of experimental animals is a fundamental issue for IBiS, as is strict respect for and compliance with current legislation on the protection of animals used for experimental and other scientific purposes, including teaching. Our aim is to achieve the highest standards of animal welfare, not only from the point of view of moral responsibility for animals, but also because quality science cannot be achieved without animal welfare. Our animal experimentation complies with legal standards and is reviewed by an animal experimentation ethics committee, which promotes the use of alternative methods, the reduction of the number of animals used, and the refinement of experimental procedures. No research project involving the use of animals can begin without the required ethical evaluation and final authorisation by the respective competent authority.

IBiS also ensures that both animal care personnel and researchers involved in animal experimentation have the necessary training and competence, and is committed to providing the necessary resources for the proper maintenance (facilities, maintenance and veterinary care) of experimental animals.
