In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the capital importance of biomedical research in our daily lives and has given the IBiS the opportunity to collaborate on the challenges that, of all kinds, have arisen. During the pandemic, IBiS professionals have shown exemplary solidarity and attitude. From the first moment, the IBiS has been at the service of the health authorities and collaborating with all the consortium institutions in their efforts to alleviate the effects of the pandemic. The strategic location of IBiS, located within the campus of the Virgen del Rocío University Hospital (HUVR), facilitated the offering of specialized personnel and the equipment available at our institute. In collaboration with the Microbiology Services of the HUVR and the Virgen Macarena University Hospital (HUVM), the IBiS was accredited by the ISCIII as a support laboratory for PCR analysis of clinical samples related to COVID-19. In addition, a significant number of IBiS groups focused their efforts on research related to COVID-19 supported by competitive public call projects.
Despite the restrictions imposed by the pandemic, during 2020 and as described in this report, the IBiS has continued to attract significant external resources and has maintained an upward evolution in its scientific production. These indicators reflect a notable and progressive positioning of the IBiS within Spanish biomedical research. In 2020, for example, the IBiS has reinforced its scientific and technical capabilities through the call for ISCIII Biomedical Research Support Platforms which, although they already existed previously in our institute, have been organized in an integrated manner and following the new configuration: the Biobank and Biomodel Platform, the Platform for the Dynamization and Innovation of the industrial capabilities of the SNS and the Support Platform for Clinical Research. There is no doubt that the advances that are being produced are thanks to the commitment and dedication of researchers, technicians, managers and maintenance personnel and the support of the consortium institutions. All of this is allowing the progressive increase in the quality of scientific production, an objective on which we must be more and more focused.
