Introduction
In line with the current orientation of biomedical research toward more sustainable practices, IBiS promoted in 2022 the creation of a Sustainability Committee as an internal reference body to propose, coordinate, and evaluate measures related to environmental, operational sustainability, and a culture of responsible science within the center.
Research activity has a significant environmental impact (energy consumption of equipment, waste generation, water use, procurement of consumables, and associated mobility). For this reason, the Sustainability Committee is conceived as a cross-cutting working space focused on continuous improvement, staff participation, and alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs, adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2015 as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (Resolution A/RES/70/1)).
Mission and Objectives
The mission of the IBiS Sustainability Committee is to promote and ensure the integration of sustainability into the center’s activities by encouraging good practices, reducing environmental impacts, and fostering a culture of responsible science aligned with the SDGs.
General objectives:
- Advisory role: to propose measures for energy saving, resource efficiency, and waste management, including best practices in laboratories and common areas.
- Awareness: to promote training, campaigns, and workshops aimed at research, technical, management, and administrative staff.
- Monitoring: to prepare an annual sustainability report for the center (actions, results, indicators, and improvement plan).
- Compliance and responsible science: to support the alignment of IBiS activities with responsible science criteria, the SDGs, and, where applicable, the “Do No Significant Harm” (DNSH) requirements (Article 17 of Regulation (EU) 2020/852) in projects and funding calls.
